Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations

The Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations in 2021 used a spectacular combination of a live concert party, a striking new Countdown Clock and a magnificent public lightshow to create a festive atmosphere in the city and bring Hong Kong to the world’s attention.

The event’s centrepiece has traditionally been a public fireworks display. Government restrictions on public gatherings caused its cancellation in 2020. However, with the COVID-19 situation improving, large-scale events were again permissible in 2021 under careful management – though large-scale fireworks were still not officially approved.

The project team anticipated that the fireworks’ absence could dampen media and public interest in the Countdown. Their response was to provide a different but no less aesthetically appealing spectacle.
